The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest fauna reserves of the world, located in Tanzania. It was named after Frederick Selous, who died in 1917 while fighting against the German colonialism. The reserve is the second largest in Africa and is part of the Selous ecosystem which includes Mikumi National Park and Kilombero Game Controlled Area. A large area of the reserve is drained by the Rufiji River and tributaries which include the Luwegu, Kilombero, Great Ruaha, Luhombero and Mbarangardu; they are the only permanently flowing streams. The Rufiji is formed by the Luwegu and Kilombero which join at Shughuli Falls. Interesting places in the park include the river of Rufiji, which flows into the Indian Ocean in front of the Mafia Island and the Stiegler, a canyon of 100 meters depth and 100 meters width. Around this canyon can be found most of the touristy facilities. In the Selous Reserve safari by foot is permitted. This type of exploration is forbidden in most other national parks of Africa. Some of the typical animals of the savanna are for example elephants, hippopotami, Lycaon pictus and crocodiles, they can be found in this park in a larger numbers than in any other African park. The strong presence of the Tsé tsé fly discourages visitation. |
