Malaria in Tanzania: prophylaxis is recommended for all areas, except for altitudes over 1800 m (5906 ft). The risk is lower in Dar es Salaam than in rural areas. Either mefloquine (Lariam), atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone)(PDF), or doxycycline may be given. Insect protection measures are essential. Wear long sleeves, long pants, hats and shoes (rather than sandals). For rural and forested areas, boots are preferable, with pants tucked in, to prevent tick bites. Apply insect repellents containing 20-35% DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) or 20% picaridin (Bayrepel) to exposed skin (but not to the eyes, mouth, or open wounds). DEET may also be applied to clothing. Products with a lower concentration of either repellent need to be replied more frequently.

Several cases of African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) have recently been reported among visitors to game parks, African trypanosomiasis is a potentially fatal parasitic infection transmitted by the bite of the tsé tsé fly. The disease is prevalent in rural areas in Tanzania. The best means of prevention is to avoid areas infested with tsé tsé flies, which are usually known to local inhabitants. Insect repellents are ineffective.
